Chemical-Infected Pets May Signal Danger To Kids

Are Our Pets Trying To Tell Us Something?

According to an organization calling itself the Environmental Working Group, chemicals contained in fire retardants, mercury and stain-proof coatings have been found in the digestive systems of dogs and cats. It is the group's contention that these chemicals pose a hazard to children and point to an increase in cancers and hyperthyroidism in dogs and cats as proof that something is up. The EWG is pushing for state and federal legislation requiring proof that chemicals used in consumer products are safe.

Children May Be As Much At Risk As Pets

The EWG tested blood and urine on 20 dogs and 37 cats in a veterinary clinic and found 48 industrial chemicals present. It did not mention where this sample of animals was taken from but the pets likely ingested the chemicals because they live close to floors and lick themselves and the ground. They make the comparison that infants also live close to the ground, often put things in their mouths, which could put them at the same risk as cats and dogs.

Babies Have Yet To Be Tested

The American Chemistry Council which represents chemical manufacturers is not yet willing to admit that our babies could be at risk from household cleaners and the like. This would cause wide-spread panic among the Pine Sol/Lysol set and cause stocks to take a dive. They are careful to say that "tests of chemicals in humans can be mis-leading without some context," which is corporate double speak for denying any responsibility. Bottom line is read the labels and watch what you put on your floors.
