What Kinds of Dog Food Do You Feed Your Dog?

Who Makes the Best Dog Food?

And what makes it the best? And is it the best dog food for your dog? I am getting a lot of flack lately about putting my dog on a better diet than dry kibble, specifically Purina's Beneful brand. My vet says it's a good food and my dog likes it, I supplement it with any kind of fruit or vegetable that he likes, which isn't many. But when I go to the local feed store here in my town, there are so many claims of the benefits of this or that dog food, hundreds of fancy labeled bags of dog food, each with it's own story (and a high price to match).

I even have people tell me they swear by the raw diet or the cooked foods diet. So, my question is, as the proud owner of a former rescue dog, now a healthy & happy 5 year old, 70 lb lab, how do I keep him that way?

I really cannot tell which dog food is the best for our dogs, but we give them different foods each time. They like eating dry kibble too, but we only feed them that if we have nothing else to give them at the time. Our parents’ dogs are always given leftover food (rice, sauce, chicken bones, etc.). Surprisingly, they never get sick and they even reach up to their old age.

I've been urged to try the raw diet for my dog, telling me that feeding them kibble is like feeding a kid kraft dinner all their life and expecting them to grow up healthy. Thanks for stopping by Felicia, you are becoming a regular here and I appreciate your comments!

I feed Nutro. When you chose a dog food make sure it doesn’t have any animal bi-products and you should be fine. I would check with your vet to see if your breed requires any suppliments and if so what. This way you are maxing your dogs health without maxing your budget. My vet says Science Diet is crap dog food so I don’t use it. She recommends the Nutro, so I use it. I have heard that Science diet sells to vets for cheaper than pet stores so vets make a larger profit but I have no proof of that (a vet told me this). Good luck.

Just do not think, that every food we humans enjoy is good for your dog! Chocolate for instance, is pure poison for your pet. Also never use human toothpaste to clean his teeth! I do not know if a raw food diet would be a good idea..i'm certain it's healthy for humans though…

    Hi there,

You sound like a loving owner and you describe your Labrador as healthy and happy so I think you are doing a great job already.

Of course, meals have to be wholesome and nutritionally balanced. For me, if I had the time, I would prepare my dog’s meals from scratch. That way, I have full control of the proteins, vitamins and the calories.

If you go the homemade route then there are many recipes online.

    Good luck!
